COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING. NOXIOUS WEEDS PROBLEM. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna County Council a letter was received from the Public Works Department stating that the Main Highways Board was not in a position to declare any additional Main Highways this year.
The council discussed at some length the question of noxious weeds in the county, particular reference being made to the growth of gorse and broom. It was decided to draw the Department’s attention to the matter, asking that immediate steps be taken to have the weeds cut before seeding takes place. The matter of noxious weeds on County roads was discussed and it was decided that for the current year the Council take no action in the clearing of weeds on roads as the matter was one for the attention of individual farmers. The council had already resolved to draw the Department’s attention to weeds in this County, and it was the Department’s duty as administrator of the Noxious Weeds’ Act, to see that the farmers carried out their job of clearing these weeds. Instructions were issued that all weeds be cleared from off the lands occupied by the County. Immediate attention will be given to gorse and broom, and instructions were issued that all persons leasing lands from the County be notified to take immediate steps to clear weeds from off the lands.
