Two dogs pranced along the bank barking excitedly while a third swam rapidly downstream after a terrified duckling in the Avon near the Canterbury Rowing Club’s sheds (states the “Star-Sun”). A woman, taking her dogs for a walk, made no effort to call the dogs off, and was apparently content to watch the cruel efforts of the dogs to catch the duckling. Eventually the little bird became so exhausted that its pace became slower and the dog caught up. In a swirl of water the duckling disappeared. A frantic mother dived repeatedly for her duckling. The woman went on with her dogs. A passer-by, on the opposite side of the river, shouted at the woman: “You ought to be well ashamed of yourself, letting your dogs kill ducklings like that.” The woman hastened away.
