STATE THEATRE

“FOUR MEN AND A PRAYER.” The startling story of “Four Men and a Prayer,” wil be finally shown tonight. The theme is an inspiring departure from the usual movie affection. Four stalwart young men, with a grand old soldier-father, are bound by a gallant pledge to rove the world to avenge his dishonour and death. That great love pervades the entire story. Yet the beauty of Loretta Young and her love for one of the brothers, Richard Greene (a sensational new star discovery), is a joy to behold. Miss Young gives a flawless performance as the American girl who covers her intense loyalty to the brothers’ cause with an “American” flippancy which amazes her British sweetheart most of all, but more than anything puts spirit and vigour into the grim quest. There are superb characterisations in the great cast. The impressive dramatic power of the picture holds the attention firmly from, first to last. It is one of the most unique and outstanding pictures of the year. “JOSETTE.” The star production at the State Theatre commencing tomorrow will be “Josette,” an outstanding comedy, with Don Ameche, Simone Simon and Robert Young in the leading roles. This tantalising story is gayer than a, Mardi Gras, with these three delightful stars at their best. Three new song hits are featured in the musical background of the film. These songs are “May I Drop a Petal in Your Glass of Wine?” “In Any Language,” and “Where in the World.” Bert Lahr and Joan Davis, sensational new comedy team first seen in “Love And Hisses,” head the featured cast of “Josette.” The film is Joan Davis’s first since she was voted No. 1 comedienne in a New York daily’s nationwide poll. Paul Hurst, William Collier, Senr., and Tala Birell are included in the cast. The screen play by James Edward Grant was based upon a play by Paul Frank and Georg Fraser, from a story by Ladislaus Vadnai.
