AJAX’S GREAT RECORD MELBOURNE CUP COMMENT did the wrong horse win? By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 11.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The Sydney “Herald” commenting on Ajax equalling Phar Lap’s Australian record with a . sequence of fourteen wins points out that Phar Lap has now disappeared from the list of Australian and New Zealand time record holders, Manolive having established hew figures for the mile and a-quarter. The “Herald” says if Catalogue had won the V.R.C. Handicap instead of finishing a moderate fifth he might have settled the vexed question qf whether he won the Melbourne Cup on his merits. Those who argue in favour of Bourbon have support in the fact that Catalogue met Bourbon on Saturday on only three pounds worse terms than in the cup, and Bourbon’s success was accomplished as easily at Catalogue’s failure to finish better than fifth in the V.R.C. Handicap emphasised the falsity of the cup result.
The ‘"telegraph” says that Mr MacDonald, trainer in Australia of Catalogue, admitted after Saturday's race that perhaps the wrong horse won the cup.
