TURF NEWS & NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE & COURSE Views on Racing Facts and Fancies , GOOD PROGRESS BY ORNAMENTAL

(By

“The Cynic.”)

Excellent progress is being made by the two-year-old Chelandry, by Vaals —Ornamental. She is filling out, and working with more dash in each sprint allotted her. A member of H. Jury’s team, Chelandry should be a prospect in a minor juvenile handicap in the near future. Sir Abb. Sir Abb was allowed to forgo his engagement at Cambridge on Labour Day, but there is nothing amiss with him. Sir Abb has been sprinting with all his former dash, and if his bleeding trouble does not recur, looks like having a further period of usefulness. Plenty of Speed. As The Trimmer is to have his next race at Avondale, I. Tucker is sending him along again in his work. A son of Vaals, The Trimmer has always shown speed, but he has taken a long time to settle down. He galloped well during the week, and a winning turn for him is due at any time.

May Win Soon. Astral Flash ricked herself a couple of days before the Gore meeting, and was not produced until the Second day. She apparently made a good recovery, as she went quite a sound race under the circumstances. The next time out should find her in the money.

Done VVeIL Galleon has been brought in again by F. W. Ellis. He has been out for almost four months, and the spell has done him well. Usually he races best towards the end of the season, and when produced at Christmas he will let them know he is about. He is probably a better handicap horse than Milford.

Improved. , Bow Street improved a ton under F. W. Ellis, and Won in his first two starts from his new quarters. An important factor in his success was the horsemanship of F. Voight, who had to ride him right out both days.

An Inbred Stayer. Mr Peter Beatty has not been an owner for long, but he has Won the Derby with Bois Roussel and the Ebor Handicap with Foxglove 11. He bought each of these three-year-olds on the advice of the Aly Khan, son of the Aga Khan. Bois Roussel is by the French horse Vatout, but is out of an English mare,- Lucky Liege, and like Foxglove 11, was bred in France Foxglove II is by an English silre Standing; in France, Foxhunter, out of Staylace, who was by Teddy out of Straitlace. Foxglove 11, who is a very good three-year-old stayer, is exceptionally inbred, for Straitlace was by Son-in-Law, while Foxhunter, Who won the Gold Cup at Ascot, was by Foxlaw, who was by Son-in-Law. He is,' indeed, more inbred to Son-in-Law than Felsted is to Carbine. Inbreeding is Seldom experimented with, but seems sometimes to be successful. Foxglove II WOP this Ebor without having to do all that he could do, and When he came back to the paddock after the race had hardly turned a hair.

Half Note. Half Note, after slipping a foal to Paladin, has been on a visit to Te Monanui, and is again in work. She will be kept going for some little time and bowls along freely in her work.

Has Speed. W. E. Hazlett’s latest purchase is King Willow and the Woodend gelding has been schooled regularly at Invercargill during the past fortnight. He knows more about the jumping game than most novices, and it looks as though he will be a real find when, raced over hurdles during the holidays. On the flat he showed that he has plenty of speed and sticks on with it.

Looks Right. King’s Chorus raced only once at Gore, when he finished right up behind the placed horses. The Nigger Minstrel —Queen Balboa three-year-old looks certain to be a winner before he is much older.

Can Sprint. You can mark Norseman’s name down, as likely to lead a decent sprint field home at any time. He is no beauty to look at, but he can sprint better than most, and up to a mile, there are few better in his class.

Spendthrift. Spendthrift was withdrawn from his Riccaftori engagements. He raced badly at Gore and it is doubtful if he is forward enough. The three-year-old will be all the better for this decision.

Raced Badly. On top of some good work on the tracks, Ardmayle looked a certainty to pay his way at Gore, but he fell down on the job and raced badly. He is much better than this form would make up and will only have to repeat his track work to be hard to beat when next raced.

A Final Failure. The owner of I’Aiglon, winner of the last Sydney Cup, had a nice bet going on the Melbourne Cup. He took £SOOO to £65 about horses by The Buzzard winning the two cups. Buzalong accounted for the Caulfield Cup, and I’Aiglon, Maurader and Gay Knight were in the Melbourne Cup, but none gained a place. The Buzzard is a great-grandson of Carbine. Another investor had something like £13,000 to £2OO about Nuffield winning the two Derbies and the cup, and with the two classics to his credit, the colt looked like completing the treble, but he was another three-year-old to fail over two miles. Worth Winning. At one time the Melbourne Cup was the world’s most valuable handicap race, on at least three occasions being

worth more than £13,000. When Bitalli won in 1923 the gross value was £13,288, of which £10,288 went to the winner. In Carbine’s year the cup was worth £13,230, and the prizemoney was £13,215 when Windbag won. England’s richest race is the Eclipse Stakes of 1928, won by Fairway, the stakes totalling £13,306, but it was a not a handicap. In recent years America has taken the lead with £20,000 handicaps. Phap Lap received £9428 for his Melbourne Cup, and more than £13,000 for his victory in Mexico, and even bigger rewards are obtainable at Santa Anita. It is not likely that Bitalli’s record will be broken for a long time to come. At one time all nomination and acceptance fees (often totalling £3000) were added to the stake, but now they are retained by the club.and the first horse receives an even £7OOO.
