MR PIROW’S MISSION

PORTUGAL NOT SELLING TERRITORY MEASURES OF CO-OPERATION By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. LONDON, November 4. If the intention of Mr O. Pirow, South African Defence Minister, in visiting Lisbon was to suggest the cession or the selling of a portion of Angola (Portguese West Africa) to Germany, he has not succeeded, says the “Manchester Guardian." Well-informed South Africans state that Dr Salazar, Premier of Portugal, immediately short-circuited the discussion of Germany’s claims, declaring that they did not concern Portugal, which held her African colonies through an age-long right. Nevertheless, it is believed that Portugal and South Africa have agreed on a closer accord in trade and defence matters, exchanging verbal assurances of mutual interest. A direct air service from Angola to South Africa, which would be valuable in war time, was also discussed.
