CARTERTON
AMATEUR DRAMATIC CLUB. MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the executive committee of the Carterton Amateur 'Dramatic Club was held in the Tivoli Theatre office. Communications were received from Messrs J. A. B. Lawrence and J. Steel, accepting the honorary positions of president and vice-president of the club, respectively, accompanied by donations to the club funds
The producer notified that owing to inability to procure a complete cast it would not be possible to produce a second play before the Christmas holidays. This notification was received, with regret. It was decided to suspend activities of the club until March of next year.
Regarding subscriptions for the ensuing year the secretary was instructed to send accounts to all members by March 1, 1939, and it was decided that subscriptions be 7s 6d reducable to 5s if paid by March 31, 1939. The stage manager reported that the scenery lent to the Girls’ Club for the production of Cinderella had been returned in good order and, condition. Regarding the’ social evening for all members of the club each year, the committee decided to hold one in 1939 after the first production in May. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £4 17s 3d, the receipts for the past month being £2 10s 6d.
Government Houses. It is understood that the successful applicants for the tenancy of the new Government houses in Kent Street, Carterton, are Messrs R. Forbes, E. Hedley, F. W. Harrington and J. Ewan. Personal. Mr Erl Nicolson, licensee of the Family Hotel. Lower Hutt, left Carterton today after spending a holiday with relatives here. Demand For House Property. Land agents report that if dwelling houses were available they could at the moment place several to prospective tenants. Several properties have recently changed hands at a reasonable figure. Considerable Sickness. There is still considerable sickness in and around Carterton. Measles are still prevalent and many cases of influenza are reported. Water Service. Householders have been for some considerable time drawing their water supply from the low pressure service. Next week the service will be restored to the high pressure, but before the water is turned on a valve will be inserted at the northern end of the borough boundary so as to regulate the pressure to lOOlbs. If this is done it will undoubtedly obviate pipes being blown out by a pressure over 100 lbs., which is possible in connection with the Carterton service. Personal. The many friends of Mr N. R. Armstrong will be pleased to know that he successfully underwent a serious operation at the Masterton Hospital yesterday. His condition is as well as can be expected under the circumstances. Bombing Planes. Two bombing planes flying very low passed over Carterton this morning at 10.30 o'clock going north; Manawatu Show. The opening day of the Palmerston North Show yesterday was held in very wet weather and the condition of the grounds, owing to incessant rain, was in a bad state round the cattle and other pens. Last evening, according to an exhibitor who returned to Carterton,' the weather did not have any indication of clearing. Holstein cattle exhibited by Dalefield breeders were well in the forefront of prize winners. Mr Knutson gained the championship with bull and cow, Mr M. J. Parker was awarded the reserve championship for bull. He also took five first prizes, six seconds and three thirds. Mr K. G. Fairbrother was awarded a third prize. The show is an excellent one as regards the quality of the stock.
