TOURISTS & LIQUOR

INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF HOTELS OPPOSED BY DEPUTY-MAYOR J OF CHRISTCHURCH (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Strong opposition to any increase in the number of licensed hotels in the Dominion was expressed by the De-puty-Mayor, Mr J. S. Barnett, at the annual conference of the South Island Travel Association- this morning. A remit from the executive council was that the Government be urged to review the Licensing law of the Dominion in light of its influence on tourist traffic and travel in the Dominion. During discussion on the annual report, Mr Barnett said there was no doubt of the value of tourists to the Dominion, but if it was the intention of the association to add to the number of licences, either in “wet” or “dry” areas, it would be purchasing tourist traffic at too great a price. The need for an increase in hotel accommodation had been mentioned by Mi- W. A. Ott (Invercargill), particularly in view of the Centennial Exhibition next year. No decision was reached.
