CIVIL DEFENCE
MEASURES IN BRITAIN REPLY TO LABOUR CENSURE MOTION. MANY LESSONS LEARNED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, November 2. In the House of Commons the Government tabled an amendment to the Labour censure motion: “While noting existing deficiencies in the system of civil defence, the House welcomes the appoinment of a minister therefor and declares its full approval of the Government’s determination to complete necessary measures as speedily as possible.”
Lord Stanhope, winding up a twodays’ debate in the House of Lords, said the crisis had taught not only the public but the Government many lessons. He referred to the Cabinet inquiry, to which each head of a Department has to furnish a report showing the shortcomings discovered. Lord Stanhope added that guns and searchlights were now being produced of a higher quality than any other nation in the world can produce.
