WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
NEW WAIRARAPA FEDERATION. YESTERDAY AFTERNOON’S PROCEEDINGS. While the executive committee of the Wairarapa Federation of Women’s Institutes was holding its meeting yesterday, the delegates were entertained by the Singing Circle of the Townswomen’s Guild with several delightful choruses. There was also community singing led by Mrs Bennett. The “Ode to Friendship” was sung in Maori. When the new committee returned, Mrs Kelso gave a short address of advice <and encouragement to the new federation. She asked members to expand their efforts in all appropriate directions and not to be afraid of controversial subjects: Miss Wolters spoke of the good work of Mrs Austin, the secretary of the Bush-Wairarapa Federation, and of all her help and friendliness during the years of the Federation’s existence. Mrs Keir supporting her remarks, asked Mrs Austin to accept a suit case as a small token from the'Wairarapa Federation of their esteem and thanks. Mrs Austin suitably replied and was accorded musical honours. Before afternoon tea was served, Mrs R. Miller (Kopuranga) delighted the audience with several recitations. After the interval, Mrs Jennings and Mrs Hobbs expressed the greetings and good wishes of the Bush Federation to the newly formed federation. Mrs Joblin, who was accorded musical honours, asked for co-operation from all members in the work before them. x . Votes of thanks were given to the institutes providing the refreshments, to the members of the Townswomen’s Guild, to the tellers, and to the pianist, Mrs Twentyman. Mrs Judd replied on behalf of the Townswomen’s Guild and wished the Federation every success. The meeting closed with the singing of “God Defend New Zealand” and the National Anthem.
