NEGLIGENT DRIVING
MOTORIST FOUND GUILTY STRONG RECOMMENDATION MADE FOR MERCY (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, November 2. Pleading not guilty to a charge of negligently driving a car, thereby causing bodily injury to Percy Holford at Hunterville on the night of April 15, Cecil Harold Lewis, Wanganui, faced a judge and jury in the Supreme Court in Wanganui today. He was found guilty with the strongest possible recommendation to mercy. The hearing occupied a full day and included expert evidence on the tyre tracks at the side of the road where the accident occurred. Mr Justice Quilliam presided, Mr N. R. Bain, Crown prosecutor, conducted the case for the Crown, and Mr H. M. Keesing appeared for accused. After a retirement of four hours, the jury returned with a list of questions. These were answered by his Honour. The jury retired and again returned at 10.30 p.m. with a verdict of guilty with the strongest possible recommendation to mercy after a further 25 minutes.
