ASSOCIATED CHAMBERS CONFERENCE OPENED BY THE MAYOR OF AUCKLAND. SUGGESTIONS TO GOVERNMENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. In opening the 1938 conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, the Mayor (Sir Ernest Davis) expressed surprise at reports that capital was leaving New Zealand. He said patriotism was best reflected in a consistent protection of the land we love and a desire to serve. The Government of the day was entitled to receive from every section the co-operation and goodwill essential for the successful administration of the country. Mr A. G. Lunn (Auckland) in his presidential address, said the Associated Chambers had refrained from political parlisianship. The company tax .for social security must have a most serious effect on joint stock enterprises. He urged that New Zealand should adopt the system of scheduling public works, withholding non-emergency works in times of prosperity and operating them as employment became worse. The Government), he said, should restore confidence by ceasing to interfere and compete with the businesses of the country, by reducing the taxation burden and by realising that it was impossible to maintain social services at the'same rate during times of depression.
