Y.M.C.A. CARNIVAL

FINE GYMNASTIC DISPLAY & [CONCERT. WELL-FILLED HOUSE APPLAUDS PERFORMERS. The Opera House was packed last night, when the Masterton Y.M.C.A. presented its annual gymnastic carnival and variety concert. The audience was not slow to show its appreciation of the entertainment provided, and the performers were greeted with rounds of well-merited applause. The feature of the evening was the gymnastic display by the Y.M.C.A. pupils. In all sections of the work an extremely high standard was set and the instructors are to be complimented on the excellence of their tuition. The girls and boys, both senior and junior, carried out their various exercises and acrobatic feats smartly and with a will. The pyramid building was exceptionally well done. There were thrills in plenty when the senior men were on the stage. Under the direction of Mr A. Tatton, they performed, individually and together, many amazing manoeuvres on parallel bars, horizontal bars, and Roman rings. In addition. Mr Tatton had the audience gasping at his act on the stationary trapeze.

The junior girls portrayed “Carefree Childhood,” with folk dancing, and the senior girls “In the days of Chivalry” with a rhythmic fencing display. In •‘Building Health Foundations,” the junior boys were seen doing exercises, while the intermediate boys, clad in the pyjamas, showed the audience how to start a day in camp. The senior boys did some fine vaulting and also appeared with the senior girls in pyramid building. An orchestra provided music when required.

Popular musical numbers were presented by Tooby’s novelty band, a combination of mouth-organs, piano-accor-dian and piano. Mr L. D. Wales and Miss Doreen Jamieson were heard to advantage in vocal solos, and Miss Rona Edwards appeared in solo dances. Mr Sid Gerrand’s canine star- “Teddy” won the hearts of the audience with his remarkable exhibition of tricks. The Masterton Savage Club provided an amusing farce with “Old Moore’s Almanac,” an old-time drama in which a number of well-known Masterton men appeared in unfamiliar, guise. Further humour was furnished by three clowns, who entertained themselves and the audience with burlesque acts throughout the evening. . The programme was as follows: — Overture, Orchestra; Assemby, Y.M.C.A. Classes; Building Health Foundations, Junior Boys; Carefree Childhood, Junior Girls; Youth’s Way with Obstacles, Senior Boys; Musical Numbers, Tooby’s Novelty Band; “That Kruschen Feeling,” Girls and Boys; Magic Wands, Senior Girls; Vocal Solo, Mr L.
