GREVTOWN
SCHOOL COMMITTEE. SUPPLY OF MILK TO PUPILS. (“Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Greytown District High School Committee was held last night, there being present Mr H. G. Carter (Chairman), Mrs Knell (secretary), Messrs F. Dennes (treasurer), E. Graham, H. Bassett and W. G. K. Wiggins. An apologj' for absence was received from Mr J. D. Morison. The headmaster reported as follows: Roll numbers, primary 297, secondary 44. The second and third terms had been very unsatisfactory from a working point of view, the attendances being poor due of course, to the measles epidemic and the after effects. The benefits of the mowing of the playgrounds were now evident. Every part of the ground was being used and practically every child was engaged in some game or other. Organised games on set days can now be arranged. The entries for the agricultural club competition were: Calves 10, lambs 8. The judging will, take place next month. Mr F. Dennes donated a practice cricket net for the primary pupils. It was left to the chairman to confer with Mr J. H. Kidd as to the best method to cut back the hedges. The committee decided to purchase a colour duplicator. It was reported that the dental nurse had commenced duty at the Greytown school on October 11. The operations performed for October were: Fillings 238, extractions 23, cleanings 84, miscellaneous operations 12, total 357. The new patients numbered 14 and the total attendance was 150. The question of-the supply of malted milk to pupils at the school was fully discussed by the committee, and it was decided to take no action in the meantime. The general opinion was that it would be better to await the time when the system of supplying fresh milk in bottles had been inaugurated in the Wairarapa schools. It was pointed out that the time that would be taken to prepare and distribute the powdered milk would be con--siderable. This would have to be supervised by at least one teacher and take perhaps at least two hours. Other factors, such as equipment for handling milk and the washing of utensils and appliances, would necessitate the expenditure of at least £l6. In view of the fact that it) is anticipated that the fresh milk scheme would be in operation before long, the committee did not feel disposed to incur the extra ex* pense. The pupils of the Greytown school have for some years been supplied with cocoa at lunch time in the winter. This will be continued.
