WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

WAIRARAPA FEDERATION FORMED MEETING IN MASTERTON TODAY GROWTH OF THE MOVEMENT The formation of a separate Wairarapa Federation of Women’s Institutes, comprising all the Institutes in the Wairarapa area, was decided upon at a special meeting of the Bush-Waira-rapa Federation held in Masterton today. Mrs W. G. Macky, vice-president of lhe Bush-Wairarapa federation presided over a very large attendance of members from all parts of the district. Welcomes to the visitors were extended by Mesdames G. Dagg, hostess, president of Upper Plain Institute, A. Keir, vice-president of the Bush-Wai-rarapa Federation, and Macky. Mrs Elizabeth Kelso, Dominion organiser, outlined the work of the Institutes in the practical, mental and spiritual advancement of women. Mrs Kelso recalled the formation of the original Bush-Wairarapa federation, and said thjit the breaking-off of the Wairarapa federation was a natural process in the growth of the work. She urged them to endeavour to form more Institutes, as it was the aim of the movement to have 1000 Institutes by 1940, the centennial year. A roll call, of Wairarapa Institutes was held, voting delegates being present from the following:—Carterton, Dyerville, Gladstone, Kaituna-Fern-ridge, Kahutara, Kopuranga, Martinborough, Mauriceville, Mount Bruce, Opaki, Parkvale, Pirinoa, SolwayManaia, Tinui and Upper Plain. The following executive committee was appointed to control the affairs of the Wairarapa Federation:—President, Mrs Joblin (Gladstone); committee, Mesdames Keir (Kaituna-Fern-ridge), McLachlan (Mount Bruce), Adams (Parkvale), Munn (SolwayManaia), Neil McKay (Gladstone), Jolly, (Martinborough), • Dagg (Upper Plain), Freeman (Mauriceville), and Miss Wolters (Carterton). Mrs Patterson, on behalf of the Dominion executive, extended greetings and congratulations to the newlyformed federation. She appealed to members to co-operate in continuing the work of the moveihent, and stressed the importance of enthusiasm in carrying it out. Mrs W. H. Nixon, treasurer of the Bush-Wairarapa Federation, presented a. statement of accounts for the period March, 31' to October 29, 1938. lhe statement showed a balance in. hand of £24 l'2s lOd. At a subsequent meeting of the executive committee of the Wairarapa Federation the following officers were elected:— Secretary, Mrs Neil McKay; assistant secretary, Mrs G. Dagg; treasurer, Miss O. Wolters; vice-presidents, Mesdames A. Keir and M. Jolly; press correspondent, Mrs G. Dagg; Dominion Council delegate, Miss O. Wolters.
