CHIEF OF STAFF RETIRES. IN GERMANY THANKED BY HERR HITLER EARLIER REPORT RECALLED By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 11.55 a.m.) BERLIN, October 31. The retirement of General Beck, Chief of the General Staff and General von Rundstedt, Commander-in-Chief of the First Army Corps, is officially announced. Herr Hitler sent a letter to General Beck saying that the high standard of the army was largely due to him. It is recalled that General Beck’s resignation was rumoured during the recent crisis, when it was believed that he opposed the plan for the military occupation of Czechoslovakia. The rumour was later officially denied. General Halder will succeed General Beck, while General von Bock succeeds General von. Rundstedt.
