CONTROL OF EXPLOSIVES
STRICTER SUPERVISION URGED. SUGGESTIONS BY JUDGE & GRAND JURY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, This Day. , The Supreme Court criminal sessions opened today, Mr Justice Quilliam presiding. The Grand Jury returned true bills in five cases, which the Judge referred to as all serious charges, including those of Cecil Harold Lewis, negligently driving a motor-car and causing bodily injury; Thomas Robert McCallum, attempted theft; Charles Neil Neilson, attempting bodily harm by the use of an explosive substance; Mataki Rokena, known as Murdock Kr.gan. negligently driving a motor vehicle, and causing death; Ahukarama Moses Hiroti, being in possession of explosives with intent to commit a crime.
• -.Speaking of ' the., charges relating to explosives. Mr Justice Quilliam, .in his address to the Grand Jury, referred to the apparent ease with which explosives were procurable. “It does seem,” his Honour said, “that the law relating to obtaining explosives requires tight-
ening up.” The Grand Jury, in its presentment, expressed an opinion that there should be stricter supervision over explosives in public works and other camps. Some reliable person, it was suggested, should be solely responsible. The Judge remarked that the presentment was a very proper one and that he would see that it was forwarded to the proper quarters.
