HOMILY STRONG OAKS CANDIDATE
(By “The Cynic.”)
Homily’s success in the Pearce Handicap at Trentham will bring her into strong favour for the New Zealand Oaks Stakes, as she did some attractive work over the concluding stages, and was going away from Lucullus Lad when the post was reached. Homily is by Posterity from Homage, dam of Saturday’s two-year-old winner Submission, who was unfortunately taken out of the Welcome Stakes. An Iliad Colt. Lord Midas attracted attention before the Roseneath Handicap at Trentham. He is a solidly-built two-year-old colt by Iliad from the Paper Money mare Wealth, and is owned by his breeder, Mr J. M. Samson, who sent him to J. H. Jefferd, of Hastings, to be trained. The colt did not show up in the race, but more will be heard of him when he has had a few races. Resembles Relative. Serenata, who put in a creditable finishing run to gain third place in the Roseneath Handicap, is a sister to Russian Ballet, and was passed in at the Trentham sales for 200 guineas. Later, Mr A. Louisson sold her to Mrs W. Richmond, of Hastings, and she is also being trained by Jefferd. Serenata has plenty of size, and a high opinion is held of her in Hawke’s Bay. Interesting Debut, Millament, who ran a fair race in the same event, was having her first race. She figured as the highest-priced yearling sold at Trentham in January last, Mr T. H. Lowry'having to go to 1150 guineas to secure her. She is by Beau Pere from .Drama, a half-sister to Spiral, winner of the New Zealand St. Leger Stakes. Drama, with Millament at foot, and in foal to Phaleron Bay, was sold at the Westmere dispersal sale in 1937 for 525 guineas to Mr W. R. Stead, of Hastings, who sold the filly at Trentham. Should be Kept in Mind. The Australian-bred Silver Choir is one that should be kept in mind by punters. In the Novice Handicap at Gore he got chopped out at the start and was the last of the big field of 21 to get going. After trailing the field for about three furlongs, he began to thread his way through them and finished close up fifth. Silver Choir, by Silvius, raced as if he will be seen to advantage over middle distances. Valantua. Those who rushed in early and backed Valantua to win the New Zealand Cup must have been very disappointed with his racing at Wingatui and again at Gore. At the latter meeting he was well beaten before a mile had been covered. So far Valantua’s chief claim to be considered a cup horse seems to be the fact that he is a half-brother to Palantua. ■i RANGITIKEI RACES MEMORIAL TO BRAZEN KING. (By Telegraph—Press Association.)
