Picture patrons and radio listeners are familiar with the “trailer” method of giving an idea of what is to be expected in coming attractions. This method of advertising was used with novel effect during the performance of “Balalaika” in the Wanganui Opera House. It was rather startling, just before the curtain went up on the third act, to hear an announcement through a loud speaker that the company would present “The Desert Song” on the Monday night and then the announcement that the male principal, George Hancock, would sing “All Alone” from that opera before the third act of “Balalaika” was presented. On the darkened stage the actor then sang “The Desert Song” number, the full chorus joining in with the refrain. The innovation was greatly enjoyed by the audience.
