FRENCH OVERTURE

MOVE FOR UNDERSTANDING WITH GERMANY ABANDONMENT OF THE PACT WITH RUSSIA. CESSION OF THE CAMEROONS POSSIBLE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, October 21. Far-reaching steps to achieve a close understanding with Germany, and possibly with Italy, are reported to have been discussed at a conference in Paris between M. Daladier, French Premier, and M. Bonnet. Foreign Minister, today. Talks were also held between M. Bonnet and Sir Eric Phipps, the British Ambassador.

The Paris correspondent of “The Times” says it is believed that M. Bonnet’s probable aims are, first a mutual renunciation of war on the lines of the Anglo-German declaration; secondly, the granting of a free hand to Germany in central and eastern Europe; thirdly, the unobtrusive abandonment of the Franco-Soviet Pact; and, fourthly, the possible cession of the Cameroons, the former German colony in West Africa. The Paris correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph” says that it is understood that Herr Hitler, when farewelling M. Francois-Poncet, retiring French Ambassador to Germany, renewed his offer of a Franco-German non-aggression pact.
