STRONGER DEFENCES
ACTIVITIES IN BRITAIN & FRANCE IMPORTANT PROPOSALS AUTHORISED BY CABINET By Telegraph—l J ress Association—Copyright. LONDON, October 20. Immediate and energetic steps to strengthen Britain’s defences are being taken as the result of a day of intense political activity in London. The "Daily Telegraph’s” political correspondent says that the Cabinet endorsed important defence proposals and authorised Ministers to continue, consultation with the Prime Minister, with the necessary measures to remedy the present defects. The “Daily Herald’s” Paris correspondent says that France has also begun a drive to modernise her air force. She is planning to build 4000 new machines within 18 months, and the general staff has drawn up a complete plan of the requirements necessary to make the country invincible. Big orders for planes have already' been placed and manufacture has begun by mass production of types reputedly equal to those of Germany. The “Daily Telegraph’s” Paris representative says that it is inspiredly hinted that decrees are being prepared profoundly affecting all classes and aimed at ending the chronic Budget deficit and speeding up rearmament.
