LADIES’ REST ROOM

FURTHER APPEAL MADE BY THE MAYOR A THANKSGIVING OFFERING. FUNDS NEEDED FOR FURNISHING. "It is just under four weeks since I drew the attention of the public to the fact that the Borough Council had taken over the Hospital Board's building at the corner of William and Dixon streets for the purpose of providing there a rest room for women and their small children when they are in town," stated the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, this morning. "As the service and convenience was really a district one, I made an appeal to the public of Masterton and the surrounding district to assist in furnishing it comfortably so that it might be worthy of us all. Unfortunately, by appeal was made just on the eve of the European crisis and the mind of the public became centred on more important matters and accordingly the Rest Room was forgotten. In the meantime the reconditioning of the building, both inside and outside, has been proceeded with and it is now ready to receive the furniture. The immediate danger of international strife is over and I suggest to the public that the Ladies’ Rest Room be made the object of a thanksgiving offering. Contributions will be gratefully acknowledged through the Press."

The building now presents a neat appearance, both the exterior and interior having been reconditioned. The front room, which is 12ft by 17ft will be available for the use of mothers and a smaller front room, 104 ft by 15ft, will be occupied by the custodian. A gas fire has been installed in each of these rooms. In addition there is a kitchenette by 6ft which will provide valuable facilities for those using the rooms. A large room, 28ft by 18ft, is also available for future development but at present it is not intended to use this room.
