MILDEW OF VINES
MUST BY CHECKED. In seasons favourable to its development, downy mildew can do enormous damage if not checked. If it attacks the vines in the young bunch stage, the whole crop may be lost. The berries are liable to attack almost right up to the time of ripening. Even when the fruit is not diseased, the attack on the foliage is sufficient to upset the composition of the fruit. Bordeaux mixture is the most effective spray known, and as a general recommendation the first spraying should be given when the shoots are 10 inches long, followed up with other sprayings as the growth increases. In seasons that are abnormally wet, it will be necessary to keep the vines well covered with Bordeaux spray. The strength to use is six pounds of bluestone, four pounds of lime and 50 gallons of water.
