VALANTUA OUT OF THE BOOM.

(By “The Cynic.”)

Valantua has dropped out of the boom that made him talked about in connection with the New Zealand Cup. He galloped a smart half-mile yesterday morning, and there is certainly nothing wrong with his appearance. Silver Choir. Silver Choir, who is engaged at Gore, has held a reputation of being able to gallop, but seems too unsound to train on. Apparently he has been shaping satisfactorily on the tracks. Silver Choir is now a five-year-old, and was got by Silvius from Seraphyna, by Linacre —Serviette, by Grafton. A Stayer. The Koomeela three-year-old Twenty Grand, who has always impressed as likely to make a stayer, and for that reason would require some time, ran two encouraging races at Masterton. It is not intended to hurry him, and he was scratched at Trentham yesterday. Massive Colt. M. Williams produced a massive two-year-old at Masterton in Sir Crusoe, a half-brother by Defoe to Meamea. He was much above himself in condition and probably it will take some time to bring him down to muscular racing trim. Well Named. One of the best named horses to be produced this season is the Excitement —Ritual filly, Wedding Eve, who races in the colours of Mr Quentin Donald, junr, the 1924 All Black hooker. She was backing out when the barrier wentup in her only start at Masterton and was last away by many lengths. She is a good galloper, but lacks experience. Milford. Milford was a cot-case a couple of days before the Dunedin meeting and Bob McLellan thought there was very little hope of him getting to Wingatui at all. He recovered, however, and raced right up to his good track work of a week earlier. Milford, came through his two hard races, in which he finished first and second, without any ill-effects and he has been bowling into his work in great style. He is engaged in the New Zealand Cup and will be given a race at Gore this week. Safe Jumper. •- The Rotorua hurdler, Simint, has been racing consistently this spring and Has already recorded three seconds. He is a safe jumper and will meet the weakest opposition he has so far this season in the Hunters’ Hurdles at Cambridge on Monday. Allegretto. Allegretto is to make a reappearance at the Waikato Hunt meeting. When though likely to develop into one of the best steeplechasers in the Dominion, Allegretto went amiss. It will, be interesting to see if there is any chance of his standing a solid preparation after he races at Cambridge.

Likely. Aynho, who was showing up at the end of her race at Paeroa, is a four-year-old mare by Surveyor—The Sapling, and is trained at Te Aroha by E. Keesing. Last season she ran second at the Te Aroha and Ohinemuri meetings and a reproduction of that form would give her an excellent chance-at Cambridge. Bright Prospect. When Sir Tommy was beaten by Royevrus in a six furlongs race at Avondale, he showed that he has regained his best form of last season. A great beginner, Sir Tommy will be well suited at Cambridge, where he appears a bright prospect in the Bruntwood Handicap. Lochie River. Lochie River, who is top weight in the Novice Handicap at Gore, started 10 times last season and finished in a place on two occasions. At the Dunedin Cup meeting he was second to Spanish Lad in the Trial Handicap, and at the Gore autumn meeting with 8.8 finished second to Astaire 8.12 and Astral Flash 8.3 came third a length and a-half away. To Be Tried Over Hurdles. King Willow, an aged gelding by Woodend, from Kilrhine, who has shown useful form on the flat at Southland meetings, has been purchased by Messrs J. S. and W. E. Hazlett, and is to be tried out over hurdles. He is a big upstanding horse, and just the right type for jumping. In his early essays he has shaped well over hurdles. Fine Speed. The Acre mare, Pasture, who showed fine speed, but did not win last season, is again coming along nicely under the care of H. Nesbit. Pasture did well enough last season to be considered in the first maiden race she contests. Royevrus. Although he has shown good form, Royevrus is still eligible for hack races and he has engagements at the late spring fixtures at Avondale and Ellerslie. He was allowed to drop out of Wellington engagements as he looks a rosy prospect in the set weight hack races. Stretto. ' Stretto has commenced work at Ellerslie and is to contest weight-for-age events at the A.R.C. summer meetings. Glenora Boy, who returned from Sydney with Stretto, is to be given a spell before being raced again.

WELLINGTON RACES CHIEF HANDICAP TO QUADROON. BEAULIVRE WINS STAKES. (By Telegraph—Prc»s Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day., Keen racing of a high standard, with several close finishes, marked the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting at Trentham yesterday. The weather was sunny until the middle of the afternoon, when it became overcast. The racing was conducted under most favourable conditions.
