CARTERTON

R.S.A. SMOKE CONCERT. A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. (“Times-Age” Special.) A “Diggers” Smoke Concert was held in the Masonic Hall last night. Members of the Carterton Branch of the R.S.A. were the hosts to a gathering of nearly 80 “Diggers,” including representatives from Masterton, Greytonw and Featherston R.S.A. branches and a number of members of the Masterton Troop of the Legion of Frontiersmen. Mr A- T. Murray, chairman of the Carterton Branch, presided and offered apologies for non-attendance from Mr H. J. Brass, president of the Wairarapa R.S.A., and from Captain A. W. Don of the Legion Troop. At the request of the chairman those present stood in. silence in memory of two recently deceased members, the late M. King and J. Boyd. The visitors were welcomed by the secretary, Mr D. Gibb Johnston, who reviewed the progress of the Carterton Branch. In a few years the membership had grown from 16 to 105 and in every way the position of the Branch had been consolidated. Following a talk on the aims and objects of the Legion of’Frontiersmen by Sergeant A. C. Wallis, a concert programme was presented, items beinginterspersed with community singing led by Mr G. Potter. Items were given by Messrs G. Potter (songs), J. Barnard (recitations), W. Moroney (conjuring), J. Chapman and F. Sewell (instrumental). Toasts honoured included “Visitors from Branches,” and “The Legion Guests ” The accompanist for the evening was Mr L. Darke. Some domestic matters concerning the R.S.A. were discussed and explained by Mr A. E. Prentice, Wairarapa secretary. Sitting of S.M. Court. At the S.M. Court yesterday before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., Inspector Nicolson (traffic inspector) proceeded against M. McGhee, who on election day went through Carterton at a speed estimated up to 45 or 50 miles an hour on a motor cycle. The street was crowded with traffic at the time and the speed was considered dangerous to the public. A fine of £2 and costs was imposed. Judgment by default was given for plaintiff as follows:—C. K. Goodin v F. O’Loughlin, claim £37 18s 7d, court costs £1 13s, solicitors’ fees £2 11s 6d. Presentation of Cinderella. Another very large audience- greeted the musical play “Cinderella,” which was staged again in the King’s Theatre last night. Great praise is due to the performers and to the producer and director, Miss C. Berrill, for the excellent presenstation. The large audience testified in no uncertain manner its warm approval of the Girls’ Club efforts. Carterton Show. Mr L. H. Smart, secretary of the Wairarapa Agricultural Show, informed the “Times-Age” representative that the .space applied for and alotted to side shows was the largest the society has ever had. Given fine weather with the other interesting events the Night Show on October 26 should be a great attraction. Good Shooting. At the function held at South Featherston on Tuesday evening it was mentioned that for the season just closed over fifty possibles were registered on the South Featherston range, which is acknowledged by shooters to be a difficult one. Methodist Church. The quarterly meeting was held in the Carterton Church on Tuesday night, about a dozen officials attending, apologies being offered on behalf of several absentees. Votes of sympathy were passed to the relatives of Mr Melville King and Miss Blanche Blatchford. A letter of sympathy is to be sent to Mrs Henry Lorenzen, who is in the Masterton Hospital. Good wishes are to be conveyed to Mrs Tucker in connection with the visit she is shortly to pay to her relatives in U.S.A. Mr Ben Roberts, M.P., being a member and local preacher of the church, the meeting decided to convey to him its congratulations on his being ' reelected to Parliament. A congratulatory message is to be sent to the Presbyterian Church which is celebrating its jubilee, one official, Mr D. T. King, mentioning that he had helped to build the church in Carterton. A reduced membership was reported, accounted for by a number of deaths and removals from the district. The balance sheet showing an improved credit balance, it was resolved that no aid should be sought further from the Home Mission Fund. Mrs Welch resigned as agent for the “Methodist Times,” also Mr King as reporter. Both were thanked for their valuable services. The minister is to arrange for a successor. Auditors of the Circuit accounts were appointed and representatives to the Synod to be held on November 16 and 17 at Lower Hutt. Permission was given for the Carterton School to have a Sunday for their anniversary. A congregational social is to be held if possible in the first week of November. The Rev H. White was unanimously invited to remain as minister for a fifth year. He gratefully accepted the invitation. A committee was appointed to consider a scheme for alterations to the interior of the church. Building Society. The monthly meeting of directors of the Terminating Building Society was held last evening, Mr L. H. Smart presiding. There were also present: Messrs J. A. B. Lawrence, N. C. C. Shepherd, L. J. Fairbrother, Jas. Steel and G. Hughan. An apology for absence was received from the secretary, Mr N.
