ELECTRIC POWER

MEETING OF WAIRARAPA BOARD. SATISFACTORY FINANCIAL POSITION. (“Times-Age” Special.) The chairman, Mr A. Campbell Pearce, presided at the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Electric Power Board, held at Carterton today. Others present were: Messrs S. Dalgleish, W. A. Tate, M. B. Tait. C. R, Holmes, W. Howard Booth, F. C. Daniell and J. W. Colquhoun. An apology for absence was received from Mr HP. Hugo. The Secretary-Manager, Mr G. Brown, reported that the revenue ■ returns for September were very satisfactory and the estimate had been again exceeded by an appreciable amount. That .was due, as in previous months, to the very Irage increase in the number of units sold for all purposes. The net revenue for the month amounted to £5,061 2s-.4d as compared with £4,891 Is 7d for the same month last year. For the first six months of the year the net revenue was £28,935 6s 3d as against £28,698 Is lOd for ihe corresponding period last year. The effect of the new domestic rate was again noticeable in September. The number of units sold for domestic purposes, excluding cooking, increased from 97,395 to 168,075. At the same time; the net revenue for ordinary domestic supply decreased from £2,231 19s 4d to £1,887 Ils Bd. Revenue from bulk supply also showed a satisfactory increase during the, quarter and compensated to a large extent for the increase in the cost of power over the estimate. Receipts in the trading department for the half year amounted to £11,297 4s lOd as compared with £9501 15s 4d last year. The cost of power had exceeded the estimate by £364 5s 4d. That, however, was quite satisfactory when it was considered that sales of power had exceeded the estimate by £2479 Ils 9d. For the first six months of the year the cost of power had increased by £1,850 5s 4d as compared with the corresponding period of last year, while in the same period sales of power only increased by £463 12s lid. That was due to the reductions in charges and the position was quite satisfactory. Capital expenditure for the first six months totalled £8,616 Ils 9d. The installation department continued to be very fully employed and the value of the new connected load would help to maintain the satisfactory increase during recent months in the amount of power sold. New jobs for the six months totalled 136 and additions 830 as compared with 126 and 783 last year. During September 37 new consumers were connected to the system and the total number of consumers was now 5,758 as compared with 5,500 twelve months ago.

The engineer, Mr H. B. Keenan, stated that the construction of 1 11,000 volt line to Rangitumau had been completed and all the guarantors were receiving a supply. ' The lack of poles had held back the completion of the Miki Miki line. A start had been made with a survey of the Taueru line. All possible consumers on the new 11,000 volt extension along Haringa Road were now receiving a supply. The survey and plans for the 11,000 volt extension at West Taratahi had been completed and a start had been made with the construction. Most of the maintenance work in the dairying districts had been completed but a lack of poles for replacement purposes was causing some concern as it had been hoped to have replacements completed before the October and November gales. Immediately the poles arrive the replacements would be made. In the meantime, a careful inspection was being made and if any poles became dangerous special precautions would be taken. Preliminary surveys, plan? and estimates had been made of the Westmere district and a comprehensive scheme was being prepared for the reticulation of the Stronvar, Fernyhurst, Ngaumu and Te Wharau districts. The amount of installation work offering was still increasing. In the central area in particular, it had been necessary to tell intending consumers that the board would not be able to undertake new work for at least four months, with the exception of milking motors, ranges and work of special significance. Mr Brown stated that the position in connection with pole deliveries was not satisfactory. Definite advice had been received that 80 poles would be shipped by the S.S. James Cook, which was due 3 weeks ago. The ship arrived, but no poles. The contractor had been advised that the penalty clause would be applied. The penalty already amounted to £7O and increased at the rate of £5 a week.
