Mr A. H. Cockayne, Director-Gener-al of Agriculture, who has been on an official visit abroad, expects to leave England on November 20 on his return to New Zealand. '

Dr C. S. M.' Hopkirk, officer in charge of the Wallaceville Veterinary Laboratory, who has been attending an international veterinary conference in Great Britain, expects to leave England for New Zealand on October 30. He intends to return via Canada and the United States of America.

Mr J. R. Hanan, deptrty mayor, was yesterday elected mayor of Invercargill with an absolute majority over the other’ two candidates. The election was caused by the death of Mr John Miller two months ago. The polling was: J. R. Hanan 4202, Hugh Ritchie 1649, H. J. Farrant 1563.

The resignation of Mr G. R. Powell, the Wellington Education Board’s building inspector, was accepted with regret at yesterday’s meeting of the board. On the motion of the chairman, Mr W. V. Dyer, it was decided to place on record the board’s appreciation of Mr Powell’s services over a period of 30 years.

Mr J. H. Leche, British Charge d'Affaires in Barcelona, has been appointed Minister to Gautemala, being succeeded in Barcelona by Mr R. C. S. Stevenson, who is leaving London on Thursday to take up the appointment, a British Offiicial Wireless message states, tie has been for some time advisei’ on League of Nation affairs in the Foreign Office. Mr John Farrell, for seventeen years architect to the Auckland Education Board, and a former mayor of Grey Lynn, died at his home in Devonport yesterday, at the age of 70 years. He twice unsuccessfully contested seats in Parliament, once against the late Sir George Fowlds, for Grey Lynn,’ and once against the Rt Hon M. J. Savage, for Auckland West.

Mr Sydney H. Agar, of the Public Works Department, died at his home .in Khandallah yesterday at the age of 60 years. IVIr Agar was a son of the late Mr and Mrs George Agar. He was educated at the Lyttelton School and.the Boy’s High School, Christchurch. On leaving school, he was apprenticed to the engineering firm of Anderson’s Ltd, Christchurch. In 1901 he joined the staff of the Public Works Department and had experience in bridge building both in the North Island and in Central Otago.

Last evening, the members of the Saint Andrew Society Dance practices entertained Messrs Marshall Walker and Alex Cruickshank, by way of recognition of the value of the services they had rendered in the conduct of the parties. The entertainment took the form of a social and dance at the Orange Hall, and there were very few of those who have attended the practices who were not present. The gathering was organised by Mrs J. Betty and Messrs D. and G. Milne. During the evening, Mrs Betty made a happy little speech, at the conclusion of which, on behalf of the members, she presented to each of the honoured guests a' tie and a scarf, each being of the tartan appropriate to the recipient. Messrs Walker and Cruickshank suitably replied.
