“FLESH AND BLOOD”
FILM AND CONCERT ARTISTS COMING TO NEW ZEALAND EELSON EDDY INCLUDED. ALSO JEANETTE MACDONALD AND GRACE MOORE. Mr Ernest Rolls, representing Williamson Theatres, has just returned from a tour abroad, with news of a great invasion of “flesh and blood” performers for Australia and New Zealand. He has made arrangements for the production of 20 new plays and the importation of 170 artists. Grace Moore will open in Australia in April or October, and Jeanette MacDonald, Nelson Eddy, Lily Pons, Paul Robeson, Richard Crooks, Lelina Segrina (Cuban dramatic soprano), and the Kordas Gipsy Orchestra (consisting of 24 youths about 16 years of age), and Yehudi Menuhin will come within the next year or two.
“The Women,” opening in Melbourne shortly, will be the first of several stage productions. It will be followed by the London Casino Revue, a company from the Paris Folies Bergere, the “Nine Sharp Revue” (with Cyril Ritchard),' and the musical comedies, “The Fleet’s - Lit Up,” “Me and My Girl,” “Yes, My Darling Daughter” and “Nights of Song” (founded on the lives of Gilbert and Sullivan). Dramatic plays will include Clifford Odets’ “Golden Boy,” “Susan and God” (a comedy of the Oxford group), .“There’s Always Juliet,” “Biography,” “Robert’s Wife,” and Sir Cedric Hardwicke in “Shadow and Substance.” Sir Cedric Hardwicke, the English stage and screen star, will open in “Shadow and Substance,” in July. Paul Lukas, the film star, will come to Australia in Aprili • A new theatre, seating 1700 and costing £200,000 is to be erected in Sydney, and will be opened by next June. Perfect Specimen,” starring handsome Errol Flynn and Joan Blondell, opens at the Regent on Saturday. In addition to those two stars, the film features Hugh Herbert (as a goofy poet), Edward Everett Horton, May Robson, Dick Foran, and Beverly Roberts, who combine in one of the year’s best laugh-makers.
