KURRAWONG A GOOD HORSE

(By “The Cynic.")

It is a long time since G. Neich, the Clareville trainer, had a good horse in his stable, but in Kurrawong he has one who should not be long in winning a race. Kurrawong is a four-year-old bay gelding by Cape Horn from Lady Ideal, a mare with whom Neich won many sprint races for Mr S. W. Feast, of Greytown. There was probably no more brilliant horse from the barrier than Lady Ideal at the time she raced. Kurrawong ran a third and a second at Masterton last week, each day coming with a powerful finishing run and staying- on solidly. On the second day he was unlucky not to get a clear run. The attractive part of the performance was his ability to maintain the early pace set by such horses as Rhodesian and Hunter’s Eve who are two of the fastest scurriers in commission. Kurrawong is engaged at Trentham today in the Rimutaka Handicap, and looked one of the best of the lightweight prospects. Better Advantage. In the Gordonton Handicap at Te Rapa last season, British Nation divided Hunting Blood and Young Paddon, both of whom have since won in open company. There was a big field behind British Nation that day, and sharpened up by his racing at Paeroa, he may be seen to much more advantage next time out. Galteemore. Galteemore, who won last week, helps to perpetuate in a modest way the name of the English Derby winner of 1897. The English horse was sold to the Russian Government at 20,000 gns. and some time later re-sold to the German Government at 14,000gns. The New Zealand Galteemore was got by Martarma from Lady Colossus by Colossus—Markwood, by King Mark— Woodhey, by Birkenhead—Goyt, by Dreadnought—Thame, by Sword Dance from Lady Mersey, a sister to Carbine. Galteemore is bred on sound staying lines and may train on to win over a distance. From Salisbury Stock. War Cloud, who won the maiden event at the Masterton meeting, is by Lord Warden from Cloudburst .Tractor —Droski), a half-sister to Overdrawn, Ravenna (dam of Ventrac, Travenna, and Alma), and Bonnie Lake (dam of Mobile). The Trentham trainer H. B. Lorigan picked up War Cloud at the yearling sales for 55gns.,‘ and resold to Mr F. Elbe. Confident. Those Canterbury admirers of Maligigi’s chance in the New Zealand Cup have become further confident now that the Te Rapa-trained horse has been nominated for the J. F. Buchanan Memorial Handicap at Motukarara. This indicates that he will be here for the big November race. The Buzzer and Padishah are other North Island performers who will add considerable interest to that race. Improved Form. Aggravate has been showing improved form on the tracks, and he must be considered in the highweight field which he will meet at Rangiora on Labour Day. Good Showing. Moonraider was not produced the second day at Wingatui and the Night Raid filly was returned home. There was nothing amiss with her, and her connections were pleased at the good showing she made. She is set down to race at Gore this week and is. a likely improver. Stud Purposes. Alex. Chisholm has been asked to put a price on Boswell, but he has not been keen to do so. It is his intention to retain the Balboa stallion for stud purposes later on. Boswell is an outstanding type and is certainly the best-bred Balboa horse about, as his dam was no other than the imported Celerity 11., a great race mare. Boswell has recovered from the injuries he received at Geraldine, and is fit and well to race at Gore. Solid Work. Ocean Singer has been doing a good amount of solid work, and will be in fairly forward order at Gore. He may, however, need a race to tune him up. His record toward the end of last season was a useful one, and he looks like carrying on. Hinerawe. The Robespierre filly Hinerawe, who won last week was produced by the New Zealand Cup winner Oratrix, by Kilbroney—Oratress. Oratrix is a sister to Concentrate. Ortyx. Last season Ortyx was a particularly speedy two-year-old, and again shows brilliancy on the track. It will be interesting to note if extra age has added stamina to speed. Defaulter. Defaulter appeared at Wingatui as a big lusty colt likely to be sharpened up by racing, and since then he has been doing well enough to improve on form as a three-year-old. Dark Flight. Dark Flight, who created a good impression by winning at the Dunedin spring meeting, has been training on nicely since then. He looks as if extra age will add strength to his frame.

A Hyades Colt. The brown cold by Foxbridge (son of Foxlaw) from Hyades, purchased for lOOOgns. in’ New Zealand last January by Sir Sydney Snow and Mr Allan Lewis, has reached Sydney. The colt who is a half-brother of the Derby winner Ammon Ra, has gone to B. R. Pay ten’s Randwick stable.
