MOTOR FATALITY
CHARGE AGAINST MAORI AT WANumNUI. COURT HEARING AND INQUEST. ■By Telegraph—Press Association.) ' WANGANUI, This Day. As a sequel to a fatal motor collision near Wangaehu last Friday night, Matari Rokena, known as Murdock Rogan, a resident of Ratana Pa, aged ?9, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court today with negligently driving and causing the death of Joan Elizabeth Oldfield. Evidence was heard before Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M., and Mr M. S. Dixon, Coroner, also sat and conducted an inquest. Evidence by the driver of the car in which Miss Oldfield was a passengei- was that he noticed the truck coming toward him from the direction of Ratana Pa, but it was not giving him much room and was edging toward him. It struck his car and continued oh. Witness brought his car to a standstill and found that Miss Oldfield had been seriously injured and was unconscious. The truck returned later, going in the direction of Ratana Pa, but again did not stop. Still later, tne truck returned once more. The police in the meantime had arrived on the scene and arrested the accused. The hearing is proceeding.
