Coal for Gasmaking.

Experiments in the mixing of New Zealand coal with Australian for use in vertical gas retorts in the Dominion have been carried out during the last year with successful results, according to a statement made by the Minister for Mines (the Hon P. C. Webb). He said these retorts, which were in use in Wellington, Palmerston North, Gisborne, and a few other places were so constructed that it was difficult to use swelling coals, and as all New Zealand coals swelled during combustion the companies concerned had formerly used only imported coals. It had now been found practicable to use up to 25 per cent New Zealand coal with Newcastle in the vertical retorts.
