HEAT IN VICTORIA
CONDITIONS OF DROUGHT WIDESPREAD OUTLOOK SERIOUS FOR CROPS AND PASTURES. EARLY BUSH FIRE DANGERS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright MELBOURNE. October 17. With a maximum temperature of 89 today, Melbourne experienced the hottest day of the season, accompanied by a fierce north wind. Conditions were unpleasant in the city and the country. A cool change is in sight, but urgently-needed rain to relieve the drought conditions is not expected yet. Crop and pasture conditions throughout Victoria are now becoming serious. Wheat crops are not expected to yield more than the half-yearly estimates. The country water storages are becoming rapidly exhausted. The dry season has caused early bush-fire danger. Three outbreaks which occurred today rapidly assumed menacing proportions, being fanned by a strong wind. The most serious outbreak occurred near Gisborne, 40 miles from Melbourne, where a number of houses were only saved through the desperate efforts of fire-fighters.
