"Jones ’ Family applicants rose steeply during the year from approximately 600 to over 1200, due to newcomers from distant parts arriving practically penniless and looking for work.” states the annual report of the Napier Social Service Committee. "Mr G. B. Young collected approximately 600 packages, this again being supplemented by tea. sugar and butter from the Mayor's fund. Christmas cheer was distributed to 169 families, enabling them to purchase goods in season at that time of the year. Mr G. Husheer again assisted with a generous donation."
