FRANCIS DRAKE TRAINING ON
(By
“The Cynic.”)
Francis Drake, who figures amongst the acceptances for the Wellington Handicap, has been a disappointment this season, but should be training on, as his next engagement suggests. Sceptre. One of the youngesters engaged in ' the Wellington Stakes is named Sceptre, a repetition of the name of one of the most famous mares in English racing history. The name should not be allowed. The Queen. Queen of Song was said to be unlikely to repeat form, but that opinion appears to be a bit wide of the mark after her third in the Coongy Handicap, run on 2min 4sec. Half Note, i The Paper Money mare Half Note slipped a fine-looking colt foal to Paladin a few weeks ago, and has been put back into work. She looks in good condition to start a preparation, and has been mated this season with Te Monanui; Triple Success. Beaulivre, a winner at Masterton on Wednesday, is a two-year-old by Beau Pere from Passbook, by Paper Money from Password, by Martian from Secret Link by Bezonian. Beaulivre was bred and is being raced by Mr W, Higgins, who was also represented by two other winners in Cricket and Royal Star 11, on Wednesday. Mr Higgins is at present in hospital in London. Bred by Mr G. Kain. Xavier, a recent two-year-old winner in Melbourne, was bred by Mr G. A. Kain, of Orari, and is a chestnut colt, by Lord Warden from El Boa, by Balboa from El Sorella, dam of Mount Boa and Mount Vai. Xavier was sold as a yearling at Trentham to the former New Zealand trainer, G. Jones, now of Melbourne, who was acting for one of his clients, Mr C. J. McCarthy. Xavier’s success was in the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes, for colts and geldings, at Flemington on October 1, the race being worth £350 to the winner. Xavier ran a close third to Esperanto and Romford in the Debutant Stakes, for colts and geldings, at Caulfield last Saturday, and collected another £lOO. The Favourites. Tidewaiter, .Trench Fight and Francis Drake have been elected favourites for the Wellington Handicap and Gay Chou and Rebel Mate share the same distinction in connection with the Shorts Handicap. Gay Chou. There was nothing in the nature of a surprise in connection with the winning form displayed by Gay Chou. It is to the credit of the owner that he has won comparatively shadow stakes instead of waiting for. the more substantial ones to be run for at Trentham. A Change. Caulfield was once the slowest of the principal tracks in Australia. It was laid out on sand and the passing of years, top-dressing and the pounding of thousands of hoofs has converted it int one of the fastest tracks. Metropolitan Winners. The Metropolitan has long held a place with the most important handicap events of the Australian turf. New Zealand-bred horses have scored eight victories, the winning horses including the following: 1884, Sir Modred, by Traducer, 8.10; 1898, Cravat, by Castor, 7.13; 1905, Maniapoto, by Soult, 8.0; 1906, Solution, by Soult, 8.2; 1926 Star Stranger, by Martian, 8.9; 1934, Waikare, by Limond, 8.1; 1937, Sir Regent, by Chief Ruler, 7.3; 1938, Royal Chief, by Chief Ruler, 8.13. In addition, horses hailing from New Zealand finished second on four occasions. They were Apologue, 8.7, Arch Marella 8.0„ Nightmarch, 9.12 and Concentrate, 8.12. An Unfortunate Development. The breakdown of Floodtide in Melbourne was very bad luck for A. E. Ellis, who made the trip under special engagement to ride the Tidal horse in his engagements. Ellis had one mount, Fearless Imp, by Heroic at Wednesday’s meeting at Caulfield, and will no doubt remain for the Caulfield Cup programme tomorrow. There is a possibility unless he has the promise of some riding at the Melbourne Cup gathering that he may be back at Riccarton for the New Zealand Cup meeting. Cerne Abbas. J. Olive, who has charge of F. D. Jones’s establishment during Jones's absence in Australia, has not received any advice regarding Cerne Abbas. There is no mention of her going to Melbourne with Royal Chief, and as she raced badly in her two starts at the recent Randwick gathering, it was expected that she may have been shipped back to New Zealand. In any case, she can be treated as a non-star-ter in the New Zealand Cup. At Trentham. The Wellington Racing Club has received a very attractive list of accept- ' ances for the first day of its spring meeting. Riccarton stables are strongly represented, and the following horses are expected to make the trip: Silver Sight. Redolent, Wild Chase, Argentic,, Dictate, Waitaka, Rabble, Counterblast, Phalanx, Flame Queen, Synthetic, Waka, Trench Fight, Willie Win, Cape Gabo, Winning Rival, Master Hotspur, Grey Honour, Wagner, Lady Rosette, Screamer, Kinnoull, Night Dress, Good Passage, and Defaulter. The three last-named will race on the second and third days only. Resuming Activity. L. Dulieu, who received injuries at the Wellington winter meeting which kept him out of the saddle for several
months, will be riding at the Waikato Hunt meeting on Labour Day. Dulieu has been riding work for the last few weeks at Ellerslie, but his mounts in the future are to be confined to the flat.
Given Time. A recent addition to J. Tomkinson’s team is Chateau Briand, a four-year-old gelding by Robespierre from Delphine, by Arausio from Delphi by Hymettus. He was bred by his present owner, Mr W. A. White, of Christchurch. Tomkinson broke him in as a two-year-old, and then turned him out on his owner’s property until a few months ago, when he was brought in and used as a hack. Padishah Reappears. The New Zealand Cup candidate, Padishah, was given two races among the sprinters at Hastings, and although in on the minimum the public did not take him seriously, and he carried only a few tickets each day. Needless to say, he was soon toiling in the rear and was never in the hunt. Padishah looks in splendid health at present. He is big and bright and a mass of condition. A. Brilliant Filly. Tableau, winner of the Musket Stakes at Ellerslie, is by Beau Pere from Painted Screen, and races in the same interests as Gay Son, both being trained by H. S. Green at Greenmeadows. She appears to be a particularly brilliant filly and gave nothing else a chance in the race. AUSTRALIAN RACING BUZALONG WINS CAULFIELD CUP. ROMFORD GIVES IMPRESSIVE DISPLAY. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. MELBOURNE, October 16. The weather was fine and the attendance excellent for the V.A.T.C. meeting on Saturday. Amigo gave a disappointing display in th° first division of the Burwood Handicap, which resulted in a narrow win for Tregenna. Raeburn made a promising effort. Netherlea and Crojick were moderate. The Adelaide representative Tempest led always to win the second division of the Burwood Handicap, making his eighth successive victory. He has been engaged for the Victoria Derby. Romford led always to register an impressive win in the Gwyn Nursery. 775 guineas and his owner refused an offer of over 2000 guineas last week. Beau Mari and Grandson made good efforts. Wilson was never dangerous. Xavier was beaten for a place early but finished fast. Royal Fire gave an unimpressive display in the Wyuna Steeplechase, which was won by Sarokos, whose rider, A. Fullarton. won the corresponding race on Willwood last year. Leading at the last half-mile Buzalong had a comfortable win in the Cup. St. Constant finished strongly, but had little hope with the winner. Marauder, who put up a game race, had every chance. Footmark made a good effort. Avenger and The Trump were never really dangerous. Early in the week it was rumoured that Buzalong was an, unlikely starter, but this was soon discounted. Buzalong began racing at Sydney, and later in country districts of New South Wales. He has always been trained in the orthodox fashion. Buzalong was nominated for the Melbourne Cup, but failed to survive the first acceptance. St. Constant and Marauder are both engaged at Flemington. St. Constant caused surprise by finishing with dash. Alandale was prominent always to beat the fast-finishing Malus in the first division of the Toolamba Nursery. Night Legend showed pace, but forfeited his chance at the wide turn. The Western Australian-owned True Flight had a comfortable win in the Toolamba Nursery, second division. Aranui finished well for fourth place, suggestive of an early win. Grand Tour was never dangerous. Larissa finished well when she won the Windsor Handicap by a narrow margin. Top Row and Hilton were never dangerous. Pamelus, under 9.10, made a good effort to secure fourth place. Results are: — . Burwood Handicap, lm„ first division: Tregenna (J. The latter improved his position and gradually headed Lady Kooringal at the half-mile. Footmark and Marauder challenged in the straight, but Buzalong finished strongly to score by one length and three-quarters from the fast-finishing St. Constant, with Marauder a neck away.
