LORD STANLEY DEAD
FOLLOWING ON EXTENDED ILLNESS SECRETARY FOR DOMINIONS SINCE MAY LAST. TWO PLACES NOW VACANT IN BRITISH CABINET, By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, October 16. The death is announced of Lord Stanley, Secretary of State for the Dominions. Edward Montagu Cavendish Stanley, eldest son and heir of the seventeenth Earl of Derby, was born on July 9, 1894. He was educated at Eton and Magdalene College, Oxford. He served in the Great War, being adjutant Household Battalion, during 1916-17. He was junior Lord of the Treasury, 1924-27, and Parliamentary Under-Sec-retary at the Dominion’s office in 1935. He occupied the position of Parliamentary and financial Secretary to the Admiralty in the periods 1931-35 and 1935-37. He was president of the Junior Imperial League since 1933. He was appointed Under-Secretary of State for India in 1937 and in the Cabinet reshuffle of May this year was appointed to the Dominions Secretaryship. He was member of Parliament (Conservative) for the Fylde division of Lancashire since 1922. His heir is the Hon Edward John Stanley. A message from London published on Tuesday said that serious fears were felt that Lord Stanley would resign from the Cabinet because of ill-health. His death leaves two vacancies in the Cabinet for Mr Duff-Cooper’s position as First Lord of the Admiralty has not yet been filled, and it is considered likely that in filling the posts Mr Chamberlain will make a considerable reshuffle of the Cabinet, possibly bringing in one or two complete newcomers. Lady Stanley is in a London hospital with a broken ankle.
