OBITUARY
MR JOHN SOUTHWOOD PINHEY. The death occurred at Wellington yesterday of Mr John Southwood Pinhey, for many years a highly-respected resident of the Masterton district and a brother of Mr R. Pinhey, of Masterton. The late Mi’ Pinhey was born in Devon, England, in 1863, and came out to New Zealand on the s.s. Kaikora in 1886. Settling in Masterton. he took up employment in the stables of the Messrs Frank Hood and Tom Shaw. Leaving the stables, the late Mr Pinhey was employed for several years at Brancepeth station, where he became widely known and respected among the residents of the district. In 1894, he returned to Masterton and joined the stables of his brother, Mr R. Pinhey. When this concern was sold to the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Distributing Company, the late Mr Pinhey purchased a farm in Levin, where he lived until three years ago when he took up his residence in Wellington. His wife predeceased him about 20 years ago. The late Mr Pinhey is survived by two daughters Misses Edith and Irene Pinhey. In addition to his brother in Masterton, there is a sister residing in Wellington and two sisters in England. The interment will be private.
MR JAMES SUTHERLAND
The death occurred at Buchanan Home, Greytown, this morning of Mr James Sutherland, who was born in Scotland 81 years ago. The late Mr Sutherland arrived in New Zealand 45 years ago, and after his marriage to Miss Mary O’Sullivan in Wellington came to Masterton 40 years ago. On his arrival here he became the proprietor of a boarding, house in Queen Street, on the site now occupied by the Regent Theatre. He later followed the occupation of drover for various firms in the district. He is survived by a. widow, three daughters, Mrs J. H. Wacker, Taihape, and the Misses J. and M. Sutherland, Masterton, arid one son, Mr J. J. Sutherland, Masterton. The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving the chapel of Hyde’s Funeral Service Ltd., after a service commencing at 2 p.m., for the Masterton Cemetery.
