SWIMMING CLUB

activities in masterton. REVIEW OF PAST YEAR. The annual report of the Masterton Amateur Swimming and Life Saving Club, to be presented at the annual meeting on Wednesday, states:— The season under review was thoroughly successful in every way. The borough engineer has plans in hand providing for cold baths and tepid baths, and is awaiting particulars of the latest means of heating the water for tepid baths by electricity, gas, or oil fuel, so that we may have the most economical and up to date swimming baths in New Zealand. The information sent for is not yet to hand, but immediately it comes the engineer will be in a position to complete his plans, and go into the question of site, etc. The building of new baths would be a wonderful way to commemorate the centennial of our district. As Masterton swimmers will never reach any eminence in the swimming world until baths more suitable for competitive swimming are provided, we hope that after this season, modern baths in Masterton will be an established fact. It is with the deepest regret that we record the death of the Club’s President, the late Mr H. M. Peacock. Mr Peacock had for many years taken a very great interest in swimming and life saving, and was always willing to be of assistance in any respect. The annual carnival was most successful, and was attended by competitors from Wellington to Hastings. Also, club members competed with credit at carnivals held in Dannevirke, Pahiatua, Eketahuna, Carterton, Greytown, Featherston, Lower Hutt and Wellington. A dance was held at which the Club’s patron, Mr H. E. Pither presented the trophies won during the season. The Club wishes to thank the very enthusiastic and helpful ladies’ committee, who so willingly gave their assistance to make the function a success. The Club entered wholeheartedly into the Learn to Swim Week campaign, with the very satisfactory result that 209 adults and children were taught to swim. The following are the winners of trophies during the season: —H. M. Peacock Memorial Cup and miniature (Junior Boys Championship), R. Major; Mr C. Spier’s cup for Junior Boys’ aggregate, R. Major; H. M. Peacock Memorial Cup and miniature (Junior Girls’ Championship), Miss A. Stains; Mr D. Andrew’s cup for Junior Girls’ aggregate, Miss N. McKeague, and donations from Messrs B. L. Larsen, F. O’Connor, H. P. Glen, and thd late Mr H. M. Peacock. The thanks of the Club are also tendered to all the officials who so ably assisted at the Carnival; to the Honoray Auditor, Mr D. B. Curry; Mr J. Dooling for coaching; to the Club’s delegate to the Wellington centre; to Mr Kelly, custodian of the baths; to the Press for their assistance in publicity matters; and to all members who helped to make the season a success.
