VIENNA RIOT
ATTACK ON CARDINAL’S PALACE NAZI LEADER BLAMES JEWS & CZECHS. “REPRISALS” ANNOUNCED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. VIENNA, October 14. District leader Buerckel, Nazi Commissioner for Ostmark (Austria), addressing 20,000 Nazis on the Heldenplatz today, announced the termination of negotiations between the Government and the Roman Catholic Church of Austria. He blamed Cardinal Innitzer, Archbishop of Vienna, for provoking the week-end riots, during which a mob broke into the Archbishop’s palace with intent to 'murder him, and assetred that the demonstrators were mainly Jews and Czechs. He added that Nazis had no need to practise brutality nor to resort to medieval methods. The events, in any case, were grossly exaggerated. A clique of priests, who had .been deprived of power, desired to wield influence by inciting the populace against the State. Nazis condemned both Cardinal Innitzer’s demonstration against the State and the youth’s demonstration against the Cardinal. Reprisals would be taken as follows: Expulsion of all Jews and Czechs from Vienna who participated in the demonstration; cancellation of plans to give the church educational facilities; postponement of the amnesty for political offenders; Dr Schuschnigg (former Chancellor) to remain in custody. Severe, measures, warned Herr Buerckel, would be taken if the religious demonstrations were repeated.
