THREAT TO CANTON
PREPARATIONS FOR DEFENCE PROGRESS OF JAPANESE FORCE. BASE TEN MILES INLAND. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright. LONDON, October 14. A Japanese communique issued in Shanghai claims that the Bias Bay landing was accomplished without a single csfeualty and adds that the army is now consolidating its base 10 miles inland under cover of naval guns. It is reported from Hong Kong that a second south China invading force is expected to land at Namtau and cut through the' railway north from Shumchan to join the Bias Bay troops. All communications between Hong Kong and Canton have been disrupted. Four hundred thousand people are evacuating Canton at the Government’s expense and municipal and provincial Governments are moving inland to Yumgyuen. Meanwhile foreign ambassadors in Tokio have been requested to ask their Governments to take steps to prevent Chinese troops in South China from constructing military works close to foreign property or from using foreign territory for transit purposes; also to refrain from moving foreign troops, warships and aircraft between Swatow and Pakhoi during the Japanese military action, or, alternatively, to give ten days’ notice of such moves, Foreign circles in' Shanghai point out that all such precautions have already been taken and that Japan will be held responsible for damage, but obviously it is impracticable to restrict the movements of warships protecting life and property. WAICHOW IN FLAMES THOUSAND CASUALTIES REPORTED. AFTER ALL-DAY BOMBING. (Received This Day, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, October 14.
