HITCH IN SETTLEMENT COMPANIES SAID TO BE HOLDING BACK STATEMENT BY MINERS’ PRESIDENT By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. SYDNEY. October 14. Although the coalminers have generally expressed willingness to return to work, colliery proprietors are so far particularly reticent and have given no intimation of when they are prepared to reopen the mines. This resulted in the miners’ president announcing tonight that, if the mines are not reopened within 10 days, then there would be serious developments. POSITION UNDEFINED WORK UNLIKELY TO BEGIN NEXT WEEK (Received This Day, 10.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. A representative of leading coalowners said unofficially that it was unlikely that work would begin at thd mines next week. Aggregate meetings of miners on the western field accepted the formula for settlement by overwhelming majorities.. A total of only twenty votes was cast against acceptance. Mass meetings of miners in all parts of Queensland decided almost unanimously to accept the formula.
