“POINTING THE BONE”
FIRST FATAL CASE FOR YEARS. A case of pointing the bone, as a result of which an aborigine died, occurred in the Mount Isa district, Queensland, recently. This is the first fatal case for some years. Aborigines believe that if a death bone be pointed at them they are doomed. In this recent case the aborigine was a healthy man, 40 years of age, and the bone used was said to be the thigh bone of a plain turkey, topped with beeswax. It is understood that an altercation took place in a blacks’ camp, and that the bone was pointed at one aborigine, who shortly afterwards left the camp. Later he was found on the roadway, apparently in a dying condition. He was unable to tell what had occurred, and he was taken to hospital, but died shortly afterwards. Following a post mortem examination, the Government medical officer issued a death certificate showing that the aborigine died of “obsession and persecution complex.”
