WHALE IN RIVER

FIFTY MILES FROM SEA. A three-and-a-half ton whale, 25ft. long, was killed with 16 shots from a rifle when it became stranded in the mud of the River Trent, near Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire —nearly 50 miles from the sea. It was seen first by boatmen at Keadby. As news of its appearance spread, hundreds of people rushed to the river bank. As the whale tried to head down the Trent, it was trapped by the falling tide. Men working on a wharf saw it splashing in the shallow water, and some of them rowed out. One man fired the 16 shots which killed it, and then it was towed to the wharf and lifted from the river by crane. Captain C. Woods, of the motor-ves-sel Sagacity (490 tons), of London, told a reporter: — “I saw the whale when my ship was approaching the jetty at Keadby, and it went right under the bows. It was obviously lost, and rose to the surface several times for air.”
