JAYOLA MAKES AMENDS

(By

"The Cynic.”)

Jayola made amends for Paeroa failures when he won the Normanby Handicap on the latter day of the Auckland carnival. Jumping out smartly he was in the lead within half-a-furlong and, after being a couple of lengths clear at the half-mile he carried on in the straight to win attractively. Despite his Paeroa failure he was a solid fancy on the machines. Royal Bachelor. Royal Bachelor proved a big disappointment at the recent Auckland meeting. On the first day he jumped_out to set a torrid pace in front only to fade right out inside the distance, while on the concluding day he never looked likely at any stage. Prior to the meeting this member of the Julian establishment had been working attractively and high hopes were entertained of his prospects at the meeting. A Fine Performance. Marie’s Acre thoroughly endorsed on Monday the promise he showed on opening day at Ellerslie when he won the open sprint again in a thrilling finish with Orate. At the straight entrance he appeared to be in a hopeless position but, vigorously handled by H. N. Wiggins, he came with a devastating run over the last furlong to get there by a neck. It was a courageous effort on the part of the Acre gelding who should go on to greater deeds. A Solid Performance. The performance of Erination in winning the Manukau Hurdles on the latter day at Ellerslie was altogether a solid one and he completely outclassed the opposition. Certainly the class was not strong, but to win as he did under the steadier of 13.0 placed him on a plane with the courageous jumpers _of the past. Confidently handled by the Te Rapa horseman, J. Muir, he out-jumped the field to assume the lead at the half-mile and carry on to win easing up on the post. He was accorded a fitting reception on returning to scale. Dark Legion Sold. The Australian-bred colt, Dark Legion, was sold on the second day of the Auckland meeting by Mr A. Potter to the Greenmeadows trainer, H. S. Greene, and he left with Gay Son, Salon and Tableau on their return to Napier yesterday.

Gay Son Makes Amends. Gay Son made amends for his behaviour on opening day when he won the open mile on the concluding day of the Ellerslie carnival. He was always handy to the leaders and when asked for an extra effort he responded in great style. Now that he has struck form the Beau Pere colt should add further to his winning account.

Onate’s Bold Bid. Orate made a valiant attempt to win the sprint from end to end at Ellerslie on Monday, but his 9.2 steadied him in the last fifty yards. Inside the distance it appeared that he might carry the day, but Marie’s Acre, whom he was conceding weight, was carrying too many guns for him, just managing in the last few strides to head him on the post. Dark Shadow. Dark Shadow gave a sterling performance on the first day of the Auckland meeting when he led practically throughout to win the concluding event very attractively. On the latter day he essayed to repeat the measure, but the fast pace he set left him wanting over the last couple of hundred yards. Dark Shadow appears to be back to his best form of last season. Philemup Disappoints. Philemup was produced on the latter day of the Auckland carnival, but after jumping out cleanly he failed to produce the dash he evidenced at the recent Paeroa gathering and over the concluding stages of the Normanby Handicap he never threatened danger. Philemup looked a picture when paraded and is certainly a difficult proposition to follow with any confidence. From Warstep. Gold Step, another winner at Hastings, is a fpur-year-old gelding by Hunting Song from Warstep, who was in her twenty-fourth year when she produced him. Bold Step is owned and raced by Mr D. G. Jobson, of Gisborne, who purchased Warstep at Mr C. G. Dalgety’s dispersal sale at Addington in 1930 for 150 guineas. Warstep then had a filly foal at foot by Weathervane, and as Vanestep this mare won several races in the North Island, including the Napier Cup, and on a trip to Riccarton in 1935 created a big surprise by filling second place to Cuddle in the New Zealand Cup. Warstep, whose previous progeny included Goosestep and Footfall, died in 1935, at the age of 25 years.

On the Upgrade. Noitaro was responsible for a useful performance in the first division of the Gordon Handicap on the first day at Ellerslie and she appears to be on the upgrade. Last season as a two-year-old Noitaro gave indication of developing into a smart filly this term and she will bear watching from now on.

Paying His Way. Xavier, a recent two-year-old winner in Melbourne, was bred by Mr G. A. Kain, of Orari, and is a chestnut colt by Lord Warden from El Boa, by Balboa from El* Sorella, dam of Mount Boa and Mount Vai. Xavier was sold as a yearling at Trentham to the former New Zealand trainer, G. Jones, how of Melbourne, who was acting for one of his clients, Mr C. J. McCarthy. Xavier’s success was in the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes, for colts and geldings, at Flemington on October 1, the race being worth £350 to the winner. Xavier ran a close third to Esperanto and Romford in the Debutant Stakes, for colts and geldings, at Caulfield last Saturday, and collected another £lOO.

Change of Stable. Mr N. Blackmore has sold his Beau Pere —Mandane two-year-old filly to Mr T. A. Duncan, and she has joined L. G. Morris’s stable at Awapuni. She was formerly under the care of F. Davis at Woodville, and has shown encouraging track form.

Hot Box. The Great Northern Guineas was run in record time and the judge’s verdict became upset and the stakes were awarded to Hot Box. The crowding which took place at the finish seriously hampered Hot Box and Philcourt. Hot Box is a bay colt from Iceball by Valkyrian —Pebble I by Rock Flint—Petual by Chittabob—St. Perputua by St. Simon. Philcourt, who also had his chance spoilt, is a chestnut colt by Philamor — Lady Marie by Romeo —Marie Odille by St. Amant. Lady Marie is also the dam of Gay Shiela and Gay Blonde. RACING FIXTURES.
