WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT ALFREDTON. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Alfredton Women’s Institute there was a good attendance of members, and also of visitors from. Pahiatua. Mrs Hull presided and welcomed a new member, Mrs J. Spring. Arrangements were made for the council meeting to be held at Eketahuna on October 21, and two delegates were appointed, Mrs R. Low and Miss K. Smith. Several members of the Pahiatua Drama Circle gave a delightful play, and sketch, both items being very much enjoyed by all. Mrs Austin, hon. secretary, Bush-Wairarapa Federation, expressed her pleasure at being present and spoke on Institute matters. There was a fine display of spring flowers which were judged by Mrs Purvis Hay and Mrs Reg. Kebbell. Results were as follow:—Champion bloom (stock), Mrs Weston; best shoulder spray, Mrs G. Napier, 1; Mrs A. Napier, 2; Mrs Weston, 3; best men’s buttonhole, Mrs A. Napier, 1; Miss M. Napier. 2; Miss S. Napier, 3; best collection of bulbs, Mrs Weston, 1; Mrs Clarkson, 2. The points prize was won by Mrs R. Low. Mesdames Wells and Clee and Miss S. Napier tied for a prize given for least points, which was won, on a draw, by Miss Napier. A competition for best-dressed doll resulted: Mrs Dickens, 1; Mrs Weston, 2. Best fruit cake, Mrs Seymour, 1; Mrs Weston, 2; Mrs Low, 3. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the visitors by acclamation, and each received a pretty shoulder spray. . Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames T. Smith, Harman, Wallace and C. Raleigh. The singing of the National Anthem brought a pleasant afternoon to a close.
