AVERAGE LIFE WORTH £5OO. The average South African values his life at about £5OO. This is shown by the summaries of returns deposited with the Treasury by insurance companies last year. At the end of the year there were 404,960 life insurance policies (excluding annuity policies) in existence for a total amount of £202,438,509. Of these. 278,210 policies for £129,004,873 had been taken out with companies whose head offices are in the Union. During the year 65,095 new policies for a total of £35,338,359 were taken out, companies with head offices in the Union being responsible for £21,555,749 of this sum. Premiums paid in South Africa during the year totalled £7,074,436, death claims £2,035,092, and maturity claims £1,488,712. Commission paid on life policies totalled £712,965, of which £397,9*.. was paid by South African companies.
