“THREE COMRADES”
ELECTION NIGHT FEATURE The unsettled, hopeless outlook of the young returned men in the Germany of the immediate post-war period is forcibly depicted in the film version of Remarque’s “Three Comrades,” which opens on Saturday at the Regent Theatre. It is the story of three proud, yet embittered, young officers who find the trying conditions of civilian life as members of a poverty-stric-ken population almost as great a battle as the war itself. Robert Taylor, as Erich Lohkamp, Franchot Tone as Otto Koster, and Robert Young as Gottfried Lenz are the three, and of these Erich is the least affected by the war. When he falls in love with Patricia Hollmann (Margaret Sullavan), a life of hope and happiness seems to be opening cut before him, but again tragedy steps in, as the bride is a victim of a lingering disease which finally means death. Gottfried is involved with a political group which proves his downfall, but nevertheless tragedy and privation arc bravely faced by the comrades. On Saturday night, short subjects will be screened, and election returns (by courtesy of the “TimesAge”) will be shown on a separate screen until midnight. 4 '
