MASTERTON RACES
ENTERPRISE REWARDED OUTSTANDING SUCCESS YESTERDAY. BEAULIVRE A SMART TWO YEAR OLD. (By “The Cynic.”) Success far beyond expectations attended the opening day of the Masterton Racing Club’s annual meeting at Opaki yesterday. The enterprise of the club in deciding to race despite the fact that it felt compelled to change its original dates owing to the election being on Saturday, was fully rewarded and no regrets can be felt at the course taken. Lady Baron essayed an end to end win in the Maiden Stakes but the winner turned up in War Cloud, who was handily placed throughout. Telamon, Acrobat and Imogen were in the picture most of the way and when the tome straight was reached Lady Baron was half a length out from Telamon and and Acrobat, with Floral Robe running wide. War Cloud came with a rattle over the last furlong and wore down Lady Baron to win by a length. Floral Robe came at the death to fill third place a length further back. Doctor Defoe was close up fourth. Both dividends were excellent. SPRINT TO GAY CHOU. The Grandstand Handicap was a good thing for the Opaki trained Gay Chou. Racecall adopted the roll of pacemaker early and Jenkins tucked in behind the leader to a furlong from home and then hit the front to win nicely by a length and a half from Racecall. Brunhild, always handy, was half a length further back third. Mea Mea, who ran fourth, was the only other runner at all in the picture. DOUBLE FIGURE DIVIDEND. The Tauherenikau trained Larwood, a half brother to Round Up and Bodyline, won the Lawn Handicap by a neck from first favourite Nereus and returned a dividend of over a score. Nereus, Misurina and Twenty Grand hit the front early and passing the half mile were out from Son and Heir. Prediction and Silver Fox with Larwood running last. The field closed up somewhat at the home turn where Larwood ran very wide. Just when Nereus and Son and Heir were disputing a hot finish, however, Larwood came like a bolt, from the blue to collect the leaders and win narrowly from Nereus. Son and Heir was two lengths away third and Silver Fox was fourth. The winner was leased a month ago by Mr R. D. Vance, of Greytown.
WON ALL THE WAY. Royal Star assumed command after going a couple of furlongs and stayed on to win the Lansdowne Handicap from the locally trained Saki. Rhodesian, White Lady and Saki showed the way to the straight, where Free Gold and Royal Star came into the picture. In the run to .the home post Royal Star hung on to win by a length and a half from Saki. Kurrawong came from the back to collect third money two lengths further back. First favourite Hagen took charge two furlongs from home and after withstanding a determined challenge by Punarua stayed on to win the Trial Stakes by half a length. Daregain set a hot pace from the barrier and she was tailed round the top by Hagen, on the rails, Kindly, Punarua and Colfort. The field closed up on the home turn and with a couple of furlongs to go Hagen assumed command. Punarua challenged after both he and Hagen had disposed of Daregain but Hagen hung on to win nicely. Colfort came with a rattle for third a short neck behind Punarua. Kindly was next. WON ALL THE WAY. Golden Ridge, who broke his maiden status at Masterton three • years ago and had not won again since, won the Second Highway Handicap all the way. Beau Gallante, Umpire and Lustral were lying handy passing the half mile where Tareha made a bold bid on the’ rails. The order was much the same into the straight where Cricket, who received a bad check at the six furlong post, and had been well back in the running, came through fast. Golden Ridge, however had plenty in hand and won by two lengths, with Umpire a similar distance back third. Beau Gallantc was fourth. HACK FIVE TO HUNTER’S EVE. Contrary to her usual practice Hunter’s Eve did not run off at the turn for home and as a result she went on to win the Macara Handicap by half a length from Kurrawong. Rhodesian made the pace early closely attended by Free Gold, Kurrawong and Diana Tetrix. Hunter’s Eve came on the outside when the straight was sighted and she quickly disposed of the leaders to win nicely. Rhqdesian was a short head behind the second horse and Diana Tetrix was the same distance back fourth. CHIEF EVENT TO GALTEEMORE. Galteemore .gave T. R. George, the Trentham trainer, his first win of the season when he scored smartly in the C. F. Vallance Memorial. Running round the back Master’ Cyklon was out in front from Dorado, Boomerang and Galteemore. but passing the seven furlong post Dorado took charge and showed the way into the straight with Master Cyklon, Liane and Hunting Cat next in line. Galteemore was sixth
when the field straightened up for the urn to the post and he came through splendidly to beat Dorado by a neck. Hunting Cat, who moved up sharply at the distance was a short head' away third and Siegmund, always well back, was fourth. ELECTRIC RELEASE BARRIER W. C. Savage, of Wanganui, is in Masterton attending the local race meeting where his Electric Release Barrier is being used.
