CLOSED BY THE FRENCH COMPLETION OF MAGINOT LINE. QUICK REPLY TO HITLER’S ANNOUNCEMENT. PARIS, October 12. Within 48 hours of Hitler’s announcement of Germany’s intention to extend her Western fortifications to the Saar and Aix la Chapelle sectors, the French War Ministry announced last evening that the possibility of an invasion of France through Switzerland had been effectively ended by the extension of the Maginot Line southward beyond the “Belfort gap,” which was never previously fortified. ‘ The main fortifications in the Metz region are also being strengthened by the ijnpid construction of second and third defence lines, and the closing of the Swiss route to France, whereby an enemy might turn the Maginot Line. The work was ddne quietly and without an announcement being made of its progress. Experts are now working on the whole of the French defences from Dunkirk to the Italian frontier. MONEY FOR DEFENCE.
