Weizmann, President of the Zionist Federation, in a telegram to the Arab Defence Committee, in reply to its ultimatum on Tuesday, pointed out that persecution would only accentuate Zionist feeling. He declared that the Arab attitude revealed a regrettable fate for Jewish minorities in Arab countries and added that: “The Jews in Palestine were willing to live in Deace with neighbouring Arabs, provided that their rights were recognised. TERRORISTS ENGAGED. ROYAL ENGINEERS IN ACTION. (Received This Day, 9.20 a.m.) JERUSALEM, October 12. The Royal Engineers inflicted six casualties on terrorists, in an engagement at Nablus, after which they destroyed the house of a' bomb thrower. TROOPS IN BETHLEHEM. SOME POSTS ABANDONED. LONDON, October 12. The correspondent of the British United Press at Bethlehem reports that the Government has abandoned the police post, the post office, and the law courts and has barricaded Rachel’s tomb. Troops are standing by in the Garden of the Nativity where Arabs are reported to have established their own courts in the olive groves. ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT. ARABS HOLDING.R.A.F. OFFICERS AS HOSTAGES. LONDON, October 12. The “Daily Mail’s” special correspondent at Alexandria reports that he was told that Arabs are holding as hostages, but not molesting, two R.A.F. officers whose plane was brought down at Ramleh. It is understood that they are Pilot Officer Debell and Flying Officer F. Scarborough who have been missing since September 12. It is reported from Jerusalem that an attempt was made to assassinate District Commissioner Deward Reith. The attempt failed when two out of the four bombs thrown from the'city ramparts exploded harmlessly.
