NO WHISTLING
ORDER TO GERMAN BANDSMEN. Field-Marshal Goering has forbidden the bands of the German Air Force to play any musical pieces with whistling choruses, on the grounds that they are contrary to the dignity of military music. A POPULAR BARITONE JOHN CHARLES THOMAS. Familiar to New Zealand radio audiences is the American baritone, John Charles Thomas who has charmed many listeners with his recordings of “Trees,” “The Farmers Pride” and other . popular ballads. Born in Pennsylvania, Thomas first gained prominence as a musical comedy and light opera star. Concert work followed leading to an operatic debut at Washington with the Civic Opera Company as Amonastro in Verdi’s “Aida.” Responding to an offer from Brussels, he appeared there as Herod in Massenet’s opera. His success was immediate and he has never looked back since.
